Welcome to the Threes

In the Threes Program, teachers encourage children to develop and implement the social skills that are necessary to be part of a caring community of learners. Play provides children with opportunities to express their emotions, negotiate conflict, and develop self-confidence. Children freely explore learning centers, taking ownership over their choices for work and play throughout the day. Three year olds are also introduced to the concept of meeting time where they learn to be active listeners and participate in weekly classroom jobs. Children are provided with plenty of time, space, and materials to construct, create and collaborate. Teachers help children reflect on their explorations and discoveries so that they can make meaningful connections in their world. Our Threes Program includes weekly science and music classes and yoga twice a month.

LCDS Chicken Project

Program Approach

The Chicken Project

In the Threes, project topics often emerge from conversations about common experiences. The Chicken Project started when a few children shared stories about a visit to a local farm with their families. Other children also had experiences at farms and added their ideas to the ones shared by classmates. Reading books about farms, playing with farm animals in the block area, and conversing about farms revealed that the class had a specific interest in chickens. The teachers invited a local farmer to visit, who brought a beautiful hen with him for the children to observe and touch and ask questions about. Children drew pictures to reflect their growing knowledge and learned new vocabulary such as “comb” and “flock.” To culminate the project, the children used a variety of materials to create realistic chicken coops for their own hens.

Happy Chatter

The Learning Community has been an exceptional place for our child to grow. The Threes program is engaging, thoughtfully designed, and rooted in inquiry-based learning that sparks curiosity in children. The teachers create a warm, supportive environment where our child feels safe taking risks and exploring new ideas. Teachers are highly trained, collaborative, and deeply committed to their students’ growth. Any family would be lucky to be part of this special institution.
